Mali: The Referendum of July 9 Postponed


Malian President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, announced June21 the postponement to a later date of the referendum scheduled for July 9.

The Communique of the minutes of the Council of Ministers of June 21 chaired by the Head of State did not give any official explanation nor the new date chosen.

After the opposition march of Saturday, June 17, the threats of the strike of the magistrates against the constitutional revision; the official demands addressed to the president of the republic requesting from him a pure and simple withdrawal of the said project, a meeting on Monday 19, between Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and the heads of the institutions of the Republic, this project which raised so many emotions is finally postponed.

According to RFI, after the decision to postpone, the political temperature has started falling and the “anti-referendum” marches organized by Antè A bana! scheduled for Thursday June 22, notably in the Sikasso region have been canceled.

Supporters of the “Yes” vote through the platform An ka ben, who had announced a “counter-demonstration” for Saturday, June 24, have also given up.
