Launch of “Conakry World Book Capital”

The activities of “Conakry World Book Capital” were launched on Sunday 23 April at the Bluezone in Kaloum. The ceremony was enhanced by the presence of the Head of State and several other personalities from the world of culture. Thus Conakry became, for a year, the seventeenth city chosen since 2001, as the world capital of the Book and succeeds Wroclaw, Poland. The president of the Guinean Writers’ Association Lamine Camara, speaking on the occasion, said that in a country where the illiteracy rate is 60%, the event should help to reduce this figure. The former minister added, “we are currently lagging behind countries of the same size. We have included in our program e a good place for literacy in French as well as in the national languages “. In his keynote speech, President Alpha Conde, who presided over the launching ceremony, said it is an honor for Guinea to host this cultural event. “This is an historic opportunity to be seized by our people with a view to beginning their cultural renaissance and returning to their former place in the cultural arena of Africa” The Senegalese Minister of Culture promised the country’s support for the success of “Conakry, the world capital of the Book”: “I am pleased to announce Senegal’s commitment to accompany your firm commitment to strengthen the Guinean network of public reading by financing a point of reading in one of the beautiful communes of your capital, Conakry “. It should be noted that several cultural activities are taking place in Conakry and other parts of Guinea during this one-year period. Kababachir.com
